About Boyd Poole

The fourth son and fifth child of Clarence and Mary Magdalene Poole, Boyd, was born in Enoree, South Carolina, and named after his uncle. He was brought to Washington, D. C. at an early age and was educated in the District's public school system. He was drafted into the military (Army Signal Corps) in 1958 and served a two year tour in Germany. He was re-called to service in 1961 for the Berlin crisis.

 

He was a career civil servant in the Department of the Navy for 34 years. He had a very interesting and successful career. He grew up in the world of automatic data processing. He started his computer career as a GS335-5 Computer Specialist and spent much of his time in commercial data processing schools.

 

In November, 1969, he married the charming Dorothy Marie Bullock of Fayetteville, North Carolina. They had two daughters: Rosalyn Michelle and Marlene Yvonne. Rosalyn had two boys and one girl. Boyd was sort of a mamas’ boy and he hung around his mother a lot and picked up some of her excellent domestic skills. He spent a lot of time on his mother's farm doing a variety of farm related tasks. At the same time, Boyd had a long and very successful career in the Department of Defense.

 

 He was a Computer Operator, Computer Programmer and for the last 15 years of his career, he was an Automatic Data Processing Systems Analyst. He was Project Manager of a major $37M revolutionary, world-wide automated data processing systems development effort in the department of the Navy's Navy Supply Systems Command. He designed a world-wide upward mobility program to establish a portal for clerical personnel to enter the data processing field.

 

He was Contractor Technical Representative on multimillion dollar contracts and managed the first computer assisted microfilm system in the department of the navy. He was Navy's representative to the Bureau of Standards for microform.

 

He was manager of his activity's fast pitch soft ball team, a team he played on for several years. He was also a Mason, Shiner, Softball Umpire, President of the community's Civil Association and a writer. He has written short stories, songs, plays and poems. He retired a General Manager 334/14 Computer System’s analyst.

After retiring from the Federal government, Boyd went to work for the state of Maryland. He served as Special Assistant to a state delegate/senator from the 24th legislative district for several years. He was treasurer of a member of Prince George’s County Delegation and chairman of a political action committee. He was a member of the Governor's Task Force for the Selection of Judges, served as Chairman of the Governor’s 1998 Election Campaign in the 24th District and was Chairman of the 24th Legislative District's campaign. 

 

He is a member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church where he has engaged many ministries. He served as Superintendent of Church Schools, Director of Vacation Bible School, and was member of the Chancel Choir and the Men's Ensemble. He was President of United Methodist Men for the Baltimore/ Washington East District and he

was President of the United Methodist Men at Ebenezer United Methodist Church.

 

He served as Chairman of the United Methodist Men's Youth Enrichment (mentoring) Program for 22 years and he implemented and directed the Senator's Students Legislative Day in the Maryland General Assembly for more than a decade. He was Chairman of the Committee that named a high school for Tuskegee Airman, Aviation Captain Charles Herbert Flowers in Springdale, Maryland.
